4 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR SWIMMING

Get ready to break out the swimming cap, tighten those swimming goggles and jump into the pool. This article is designed to give you a leg-up in the pool and get you swimming at your best. If you’re looking to improve your technique, work on your endurance and increase your speed, we’ve got the right swimming training equipment to help you to beat your PBs and the competition.

IMPROVE YOUR TECHNIQUE
  1. IMPROVE YOUR TECHNIQUE

Improving your technique can make a huge difference to your efficiency in the water leading to improved endurance, fitness and speed in the pool.

Use fins in your training to allow you to focus on your stroke and breathing rhythm. The extra propulsion helps you to concentrate on getting these key skills right whilst also boosting ankle strength and flexibility.

Training with a centre snorkel helps to focus on your stroke, posture and kicking technique. It eliminates the need to turn your head to breathe, which can break your rhythm.

  1. IMPROVE YOUR ENDURANCE

Building up your endurance is an integral part of swim improvement. Having a large lung capacity helps with fatigue and longevity in the pool. Getting in aerobic exercise out of the pool is just as important as doing laps. Mix up your endurance exercises with a run, cycle, interval or high intensity training such as skipping, speed ladders and step hurdles. Building up your endurance will allow you to push harder and go for longer.

IMPROVE YOUR STRENGTH

  1. IMPROVE YOUR STRENGTH

Swimming is a full body workout that engages a variety of muscle groups. Building strength outside of the pool can have a positive flow on effect in the pool. Incorporate a range of resistance and weight exercises into your routine to increase strength through your range of movement, while also giving you the power needed in the pool.

In your training, balance basic strength exercises such as bench presses and squats, with strength band, medicine ball and kettlebell exercises.

By building up your muscular strength, your swimming will improve dramatically as you can use much more power and maximise velocity with your strokes.

IMPROVE YOUR SPEED
  1. IMPROVE YOUR SPEED

Adding resistance to your training helps to improve speed come race day. The Swim Tow Sponge is a unique product, made here in Australia, that is designed to increase resistance in the water by creating a drag-force. It aids in building strength, speed and power in the water.

Improving your kicking technique in the pool is also vital. An efficient kick increases propulsion and aligns your whole body to be more streamlined in the water. A kickboard is a great tool to improve your rhythm and leg speed, leading to improvements in overall speed.
