AFL PLAYER POSITION GUIDE

AFL Ball Sizing Guide

The Aussie Rules field is broken up into three primary segments; Forward, Midfield and Defence. In each segment, there are six player positions, meaning there are 18 players on the field during a game at any given time. Below we have broken down the key responsibilities of the players in each segment.

Forwards

There are six player positions in the Forward segment. Here you will have two Forward Pockets, a Full Forward, a Centre Half-Forward and two Half-Forwards. Their goal is to drive the ball forward and act as a target to mark out their opponent in one-on-one contests. They need to have a good sense of where the ball would be coming from in order to be in a good position to kick goals!

Midfielders

In your Midfield segment, there are six players. Here you will have your Ruck, Centre, Ruck-Rover, Rover and Wing players. Their goal is to get possession of the ball and move it to the Forward players.

Defenders

Finally, you have your Defenders - a Full Back, two Back Pockets, two Half Backs and a Centre Half-Back. Their goal is to prevent the opposition from scoring and to get the ball back to their attacking players.
